This foolhardy mix appeals to her love of variety and her passion to apply her design skills across a multitude of platforms. Adoring the detail and nostalgia of a vintage aesthetic, she loves repurposing collectibles and giving them a surprising twist. Foolhouse is a great neighbour to her design consultancy Anomaly, allowing an essential balance of playful back-to-basics hand-crafting when an escape from computer-centric design is required. All wood work, scroll sawing, paper sculpting, coffee reverence, design and illustration is done by Sarah in her secret studio at the bottom of her garden in Sydney. Foolhouse is found online, instores and at assorted bespoke markets around the country. All products are handmade in Australia.

A LITTLE SIDE LINE

Sometimes whilst peddling my wares, I get talking to retailers about my past life as a retail interior and graphic designer and then the most amazing things start to happen! They start to tell me about their past and current lives as chefs and artists and other side-show careers and soon we are crossing boundaries further into each other’s worlds. Last month I helped Melissa Simmonds (Artist and Shortlister in the Mosman Artprize) brand her regional emporium and gallery – check out her signage in the cutest window in town – next time you’re on a road trip, drop in – she has the best eye for gifts (yes some of them are Foolhouse’s!) and art of her own doing that will colour your world!

OUR SECRET WORLD OF BOOK SAFES…

By | BLOG | No Comments

July 1

I just love writing the wee snippets that these books inspire. Everyone should have one, I’m not biased at all! – but these really are a great place to hide a passport on your book shelf, the most unique, bespoke gift and the teens can slip their phone in it at grandmas and pretend to be reading vintage inspired prose whilst apping their social lives into oblivion! Teen girls love them too and so do adults. Every single one has a hand-chosen illustration from an old book and i write a matching story about the excitement of hiding secrets to go with it. Then i add a miniature guardian down in the corner on some faux grass that only the owner will know about. It’s a miniature vintage assemblage complete with a personal bookplate in the front and a vintage ribbon book mark. Books are rescued and chosen for their funny titles or beautiful covers. Look up close – you might be surprised at what you read and see! Not available on line as they are one-offs – that means no-one will have the same – pop into Finders Keepers Market this weekend in Brisbane and pick the one that talks to you – you might be surprised at what it says! A lot of love and work goes into it for only $45 – what will you put into it?!

WHAT ILLUSTRATION WOULD YOU ENGRAVE ON THE LID OF YOUR OWN TREASURE BOX?

By | BLOG | No Comments

June 16, 2014

I had to apply for Christmas Finders Keepers today and I’m not even done with show and tell in Melbourne or Brisbane mid-year! So there was some quick brainstorming for new ideas and collections to stir the organizers into a frenzy and be completely unable to reject me! – I think the ‘On yer bike’ theme will wheel out across products and so too the ‘Lakehouse collection’ of Treasure boxes – I’m imagining foggy canadian lake scenes and looming forests with bears and squirrels and perhaps a moose – but for now – some animals on bikes! If you haven’t got a treasure box yet – tell me what you’d like on yours! You never know if it will be the catalyst for my next range! Hmmmmm

THANKYOU to all of you who FOUND US and KEPT US!

June 10, 2014

– to all of you who braved the weather on Friday night to come to Finders Keepers Sydney and also to all of you who picked Saturday to attend and luckily braved the sun in doing so! It was a brilliant market adventure, non-stop colour and the most enchanting audience willing to stop and share stories and indeed pick up a treat or two from Foolhouse’s foolish little stall. I am eternally grateful to all those who revel in the FK independant market scene and by doing so support artists and designers who build up the courage to creep out of their studios a few times a year to show and tell what they have been up to, often shy, certainly humble and with no protection of the anonymity of hiding behind an online shop! – your interest and passion in what we do keeps us doing it. Thankyou…now back to the studio to work on the next range of treasure boxes…I’m thinking of…”The Lakehouse Collection”…trees and woodland creatures…stay tuned.

CHECK OUT MAXABELLA!

Check out maxabella – she’s said some very nice things about us and we love that!

Statistically speaking, just very quietly

I remember receiving our first-ever ‘blue book’ at the hospital, day one of motherhood. The nurse showed me through all the helpful information, the areas for recording milestones, height, weight, head circumference.

“Why is head circumference so important?” I asked.

“Big head, big brains; little heads, we just take them away right now,” she joked.

“Really?!” I panicked. New-mum fog, very sensitive.

Needless to say, I made grand plans to very carefully record head circumference as often as possible, and indeed went on to obsess over it when the Badoo was born (although it’s safe to say she has an unusually large head).

That was then, this is now. After an initial burst of record-keeping, I went on to fail miserably to record a damn thing in those blue books. I forget them at every immunisation, failed to refer to them for helpful advice and certainly never put pencil to paper to plot a single dot on those growth charts.

Instead, I did what every sensible parent across Australia does. I used the door jamb in the kitchen, a chopping board and carefully marked the date and child’s name in a pencil so heavy that it quickly smudged into a nice ancient-relic patina in no time at all. Sometimes if it has been a while between measurings I even let the kids measure themselves up and write their own details on the wall.

There are random kids on there too. Any child who is in the house on Measuring Day gets measured. While it sounds official, Measuring Day is actually any given Sunday, or other completely random day just so we have no way of ever gleaning anything even remotely important from the door-jamb data we collect.

“What happens if you ever move?” A friend asked.

“I’ll take the door jamb with me,” was all I could say.

I don’t recommend my system.

Use this system instead: a Foolhouse Door Jam. A neat, alternative and their creator Sarah has added the most deliciously humorous and whimsical touches that even if you never recorded a single measurement, you would still want to have one of these up on your wall.
