It’s harvest time at The Foolhouse Christmas Tree Farm! This year I’m felling all sizes of book trees from grand pines to miniature conifers. Come see them decked out with red robins and Christmas cardinals at @themakersandshakers this October and I have to say - they can bedeck a bookshelf all year round, I can’t put mine away! The symmetry is so satisfying!

Can you guess what today’s commission is before the reveal at the end?!
Do you ever play games with yourself while working? I try to cut in one go just like trying to peel an apple skin without breaking the spiral all the way to the end! However! the more detailed silhouettes don’t allow for such streamlined fantasies! This shape made me go back in to cut each spike separately but I think the effort was worth it! Commission for a customer who is personalizing secret Booksafes for friends - this was her brief to me for her friend -
“Is very connected to her Chinese zodiac sign (dragon), so I was wondering if it’d be possible to get some sort of dragon carving? She comes across quite stand off-ish and feisty but is actually quite sensitive in nature.” How sweet is that!

Something fishy is happening in the Foolhouse studio. This year I promised my creative side that I would take more time for exploration especially in the area of mixed media. As you know I have so many book pages and illustrations saved and archived from all my rescued books that I want to get them out of the shadows and into the light, so watch this space as they mysteriously appear in upcoming projects!
Special mention to @julie.liger.belair for her sardine can inspiration and for teaching me the skills to create this little memory box dedicated to my late mother Ally and her Aunty Fan.(that’s aunty fan adorned in red and my strawberry blonde mum resplendent in swimmers in an old thimble of hers.)

Disney may be the happiest place on earth but this Disney book gave me my first cut in 10 years! (Edited for general viewing😝) It’s not a genre of book I typically use but I was testing an idea for a customer and it ended up testing me! Can’t believe I was filming at the time but still, the show must go on!🫣😝😂
-unfortunately I have to press down on the paper very close to the blade to stop fine details from flapping up and down because pages can rip but when, like in this case the paper is thick, it can flip up unexpectedly with the motion of the blade and quite strongly too thus dislodging the position of my finger! Eek. All lived happily ever after though!!

Flying home on a high after a huge weekend @finders_keepers in beautiful downtown Melbourne. The weather was chilly but the reception was heart warming. There were so many amazing connections we made and anecdotes shared which I in turn will share after a short break for us, driving home the long way!
My thanks to @finders_keepers for yet another full to the brim market, it was a record mid-year success for my little artisanal folly and I have like-minded curious fans and the hard working FK team to thank for being onboard this creative flight xx
