BITTER SWEET
From the archives of Foolhouse’s Absurdist Collection.
This Original A4 Collage was created in response to instruction and advice given in a turn of the Century Beauty and Etiquette Book. The book was falling apart and beyond redemption for the bookshelf so after reading the 600 page tome, I cut out the funniest copy for your amusement and created an equally foolish yet handsome character to represent the mad ‘worldly’ advice. The textural collages are made up of rescued book illustrations, some from Mrs.Beeton’s Cookbooks, Natural History Encyclopedias, anatomical texts, digital prints, vintage end pages and thread and pin pricks from my mother’s vintage sewing box – all the better to tie the present to the past, or perhaps the past to the present. Note her skirt is an anatomical sketch of a tongue complete with diagram headings of Bitter, Sweet and Acid in place! Just when you think life couldn’t get more absurd…it can.
