From the archives of Foolhouse’s Absurdist Collection.
This Original A4 Collage was created in response to instruction and advice given in a turn of the Century Beauty and Etiquette Book. The book was falling apart and beyond redemption for the bookshelf so after reading the 600 page tome, I cut out the funniest copy for your amusement and created an equally foolish yet handsome character to represent the mad ‘worldly’ advice. The textural collages are made up of rescued book illustrations, some from Mrs.Beeton’s Cookbooks, digital prints, vintage end pages and thread and pin pricks from my mother’s vintage sewing box – all the better to tie the present to the past, or perhaps the past to the present. I wanted to turn the fork into my memory of vintage life guards at the beach with their longboards. This ‘life-saving’ advice is just plain silly, the rhetoric of ‘the stuffing process’ negligent and don’t get me started on the side effects of giving into cravings! But it is highly amusing and hopefully we have come a long way since these wise words were dished out! Just when you think life couldn’t get more absurd…it can.
