Carved from 164 pages of Vintage Book Goodness-
The Devil’s Advocate by Morris West 1962
This whimsical and imperfectly perfect paper tree sculpture is handmade and captured inside a glass cloche. It is a delightfully dimensional addition to your mantel or book shelf not just for Christmas but for all year round.
No book behaves consistently and all sorts of anomalies arise when you turn a book inside out to get the perfectly spaced page spiral. But the concept of a book returning to its’ origins as a tree really resonated with my whimsical side. Like us, these sculptures have a ‘good side’ – a front and a back – where they meet at the back is always imperfect so like us again we put its’ best foot forward and display it front-on so its’ good side shines!
When I make the Secret Vintage Booksafes I try not to waste any of the paper i carve out and re-use it to make these endearing three dimensional book sculptures for the bookish amongst us. They are great gifts for book lovers. No one is the same and all have an individuality defined by their paper adornments and I’m sorry but sometimes I lose track of which book they come from as I try to use all the offcuts I have!
